Yes, it's that time of the month again. You must have thought that I wouldn't stick to this monthly thing, but if you think about it for a bit, you'll realize that today is technically the first Monday of the month- hurrah for leap years! So let's get going and look at all the exiting things February brought me!
Even though February is the shortest month of the year, it always feels way too long for me. The weather is grey and cold, there's not a lot going on at uni and my energy level is at it's lowest. Luckily, this year there were a lot of parties, meaning that I did not have that much time to moan about it all.
The month has been filled with mostly social activities, since uni wasn't asking a lot and I'm still not running due to my injury, so let's get poppin'.
It started off really well with one of the biggest parties of the student life here in Nijmegen, called Beestfeest. It's technically a party for the bèta faculty of university, but since my study is as bèta as you can go, we felt like we were allowed to crash and dance till the sun came up. The best thing about these parties is that I can go to them with all my friends at the same time. Both my friends from uni as my friends from the athletics group mingle and dance together and it's always super great to be able to spend time with them simultaneously. And when that one guy you like goes and tells one of your friends he likes you as well.. good times. Not that anything comes easy for me these days, there's a lot of drama around this whole friendship/maybemorethanfriendship and it's tiring me out, but hey, that was a good night.
After this we had some well deserved days off of uni, because carnaval happened. Since I don't celebrate this event I had some time to sleep and catch up on shows and catch up with family, which is always nice. Then it was time to meet up with one of my dearest friends in Groningen, to go and see Kodaline again together. Super awesome, love her to bits and Kodaline was terrific as always so yay for that.
A day after that there was another party of two of my friends and that weekend it was Valentine's already. After spending a LOT of time considering my options and doubting my feelings and talking to friends about it, I decided to send a rose to the one mentioned above. Super stressful and not something I generally am good at/do, but I'm very happy I did it because it means I'm getting over the whole "no one loves me and I'm not able to love anyone like they should be loved" dilemma I've been dealing with for basically my whole life. He liked it a lot, which is always good to hear, and it was the topic of conversation between my athletics friends for the next week, because I had sent it in anonymously so no one knew from whom it came, except me and him mwuaha. Later that next week there was another party where this was discussed immensely, which was nerve-wrecking but also really exciting/funny, because he decided to keep it a secret and it was just hilarious to see people guess when I was standing right there.
Another thing that happened was the Haasje Bake-off, where you had to bake something and the jury would pick the tastiest and the most beautiful creation. We made this amazing carrot patch cake, with normal cake and chocolate cake, and won the first prize in the beauty category! If you want the recipe for this cake, comment down below or send me a text or something, and I will put it up!
As I said, this month was filled with social stuff, and ended with probably the biggest social happening of the year for me: my birthday. I always dislike celebrating my birthday because I don't particularly like being the center of attention, and this is a must when celebrating you getting older, but this year I finally entered my twenties, so a little celebration was necessary. It ended up being one of the loveliest birthdays I've even had, with a nice little drink and dance with some of my dearest friends, and a cosy day with my family on the actual day of me turning 20. Really nice and very much enjoyed :). Also, the weather was gorgeous that day and I was just feeling really relaxed because uni was so easy and life had been so easy in general. Good times.
A uni related event that happened this month, and which will probably change the way my year as a twenty-year-old will look like, is about an internship I applied for. They were looking for an research assistant to go to the Gambia to do research on malaria for six months. I was already looking for an internship like that and I knew the researcher doing this one, so I immediately sent a letter of interest and my CV, and this month I was told that I get to go to the Gambia in July!! Insane of course, I can still not phantom the idea that I'm actually going to the Gambia, but it is so exciting and such a great opportunity, I get giddy again just writing this down!! 6 months of awesome research in a lovely warm place with lovely people, doing exactly what I wanted to do during this period of time.
All in all, february has treated me rather lovely, and I'm afraid March will not be able to top this. But hey, that's what I was thinking about January as well.. We'll see.
Stay true to who you are, you're great. Lots of love, and see you soon!
Janeri xxxx
